Castles --> centralized power --> kingdoms --> nation states

Stone does not burn and this was a major development. However you need a lot of more people  to built stone castles then wooden castles. To built with stone you also need more skills. To get  people to built these castles, the men in question need food and safety to be able to work and  produce new skills.

Stone keep means centralized power. The large castles control and have power over the smaller  ones around the large one, which often was one of few in stone. Concentric castles were the one  castle in the middle. See picture below.
